Review of the Salmon fishing this year

 Preparation: Close to the perfect.

Let's review the preparation first, Lance. The following 5 items are from last year's trip.
  1. You should have many heavy shots.   Yes, I did!
  2. You should have heavier sink tip than type4. Yes, I did!
  3. Fishing trip should be set around 11/10.  Yes, we did!
  4. You need full two days including check the river the day before.  Yes, we did!
  5. You need more casting practice...    Yes, I did! But found out that it was not enough...

Line system: Needs to be improved
  • I used type6 tip and 2 or 3 shots sized B mainly.
  • It worked though, I hooked the earth many times.
  • Sounds like type 2 or 4 and heavy shots should be better system.
  • And leader length should be shorter a little than it, maybe.
  • Don't forget that 8 loop was good for the shot.
  • You should take the stringer just in case.
  •

Don't forget the above-mentioned items, and have better fishing next year, Lance.

2nd fishing trip to TEDORIGAWA river

11/11 Sunday morning 6:06, on the way to picking O-chi up.

13:56 Arrived the river and started pre-inspection.

Yes, we did see there was!

We had good pre-inspection one day before the fishing day.

11/12 4:08 started to wait the reception desk opening in the rain...

7:00 Fishing started, but I missed the golden time, had only one take and line break...

12:36 My late first fish on!(pix were took by O-chi)

Oops, be careful the drop off near the shore, Lance.

Rushed to land.

Nice fish!

Almost!

Couldn't help dancing!!

Yeah, my fish! Thank you, O-chi!

Thanks!

Good friends, good fish and good time. What more could I want?

Check the length of leader and tippet

Now I realized that my system's length of last year was too long(over 1m!) for sink tip. Should be around 1.8m as total, Lance. It must be one of reasons which your fly couldn't contact the bottom well. And keep in your mind your both arms reach is 167cm, and 48cm between the tip of finger and the elbow.

TEDORIGAWA

We took a half day off on Friday and headed for TEDORIGAWA river. After about 6.5h drive, we got to our hotel close to the river.
We left our hotel 3:30AM, and waited for the reception opening until past 6AM.
After finished the reception, moved to the hole together and made preparation for fishing. 7:00AM was starting time.
This shooting line system was new to me, but I couldn't have a time to practice casting.
This was only my fish today, which was caught at 7:43AM. Don't ask me the detail, please. And ... that's it.
It was raining all through the day. Even using type4 sink tip, it was difficult to keep the fly in the bottom range because of high level of water.
15:30 was ending time. Don't forget the followings next year, Lance.
  1. You should have many heavy shots.
  2. You should have heavier sink tip than type4.
  3. Fishing trip should be set around 11/10.
  4. You need full two days including check the river the day before.
  5. You need more casting practice...

Memorandum to next year

This pic from Mr. Gold was taken when I succeeded in hooking first fish. Thanks, Master 'Gold'. I liked this shot very much!

By the way, let me leave memorandum to Lance in next year.

1. Keep your fly in the bottom range of stream anyway, especially for slow condition. This is the exactly same basis as Steelhead fishing you loved. So don't forget various weights of shot.

2. Don't forget color of 'Pink' for Salmon, Lance. It was your lucky color of this year and Master KANNO used the same color. He liked small size, though...

3. For natural drifting, upstream casting just like Steelhead nymphing may be better.

4. Left hand must be key including hooking. Don't use your fly rod when you set a hook. It is same as lake fishing. But you need much time to practice.

5. Go for 'Gold'!

That's it. Have a fun, Lance, next year also.

My first Salmon Fishing in Japan

Even we drunk too much last night, we all got up at 5 AM today. Because must be crazy for fishing.

Wonderful morning sunrise welcomed us.

Good luck, Lance!

Looked a little nervous, guys?

My secret weapon 'Big Dancer' worked so well!
Definitely my first Salmon in my life!!

Leader O-chi took this pic for me. Many thanks, O-chi!

2nd one was so silver.

Must be one of fresh run.

3rd one by simple pink Zonker with eye shaped weight.

4th one as last fish was by volumed pink Zonker.

We all looked happy with each Salmon story today, except only a man who got skunked. Don't guess who, guys please.

For myself, it was so fantastic day, of course. I learned many tactics and basic of Salmon fly fishing. Couldn't wait next year!!

The day before

of Salom fishing, we was there KIDOGAWA river to check current condition of river and fish.

We left NUMAZU before 6AM and arrived there around noon. I as car driver as too sleepy and tired, because couldn't have enough sleep time last night.

But let's get started river investigation anyway!

Fishing itself looked like just 'slow' today. Is tomorrow OK for us???

Only few people caught fish.

After fishing time, KIDOGAWA Fish and Game's member started to do something.

They were catching fish by huge fishing net.

Too many Salmons!!

Needless to say, we all got mad to see them. And had confidence for our fishing tomorrow.

To be continued...
